54 Million Turkish Citizens Personal Details Stolen By Russian Hackers

Russian hackers have stolen the 54 million Turkish citizens personal details, about 70% of the whole Turkish population.

According to the Hurriyet Daily News reports that the general manager of a research company called KONDA has revealed that the ID numbers, addresses and fathers’ names of 54 million voters have been stolen from political parties.

Researchers claimed that the hacked system did not have any antivirus product installed and voter information was also uploaded online on a vulnerable website. This was really a bad idea, and they mentioned that “in two hours hackers downloaded all the information.”

Recently the main opposition party Republican People’s Party (CHP) launched an “e-elector” initiative that enables citizens to check electoral rolls and detect deficiencies and mistakes through websites and mobile applications.

Ağırdır’s claims came right after a top state body working under the President’s Office recently asserted that Turkey failed to protect citizens’ personal information due to the indifference of public institutions and legal shortcomings, requiring a substantial increase in awareness and the provision of a legal framework targeted at making progress on the issue.

Turkey’s Supreme Election Committee has been sharing the information with parties. However, since some political organizations don’t even have antiviruses installed on their computers, it was easy for the attackers to steal the data.

A recent report from the country’s State Audit Board has revealed that some government institutions share citizens’ personal information online with other organizations without ensuring that it’s properly protected.
